Diabetes is a serious problem, with over 26 million children and adults suffering from chronic high blood sugar in the U.S. alone. Since we’re used to seeing diabetes in our elders – 25.9% of Americans over the age of 65 are reported as having diabetes – we don’t really think much about how this condition can affect us if we’re from a younger generation. But the truth is that diabetes isn’t only a problem for the elderly; the number of youths diagnosed with diabetes is estimated at 208,000, and is only rising. Even worse, 86 million people were diagnosed with prediabetes in 2012, a figure that is up by 7 million from the previous year. With these staggering numbers, you can see that it’s not enough to just have blood sugar management programs. It’s time for everyone to start looking at how to prevent diabetes – not just in their loved ones, but in themselves.
